Candice jewell- 2nd year:

Candice is a 2nd year student that’s study’s the same course that I do, she came and spoke to us about working at the gallery within Plymouth collage of art (PCA). She was interested in how seeing exhibitions come together and go up so her curiosity drive personally pushed her to go and do this as a role, to see how things work.

She sent an email back after receiving and being asked for volunteers for the envision exhibition as they needed help, where she then ended up running various errands such as getting pieces wood form woodwork, getting things and prints out of the print lab and helping arranging peoples work. In terms of the set up of the suki Dhanda exhibition, she helping by taking down the previous work and returning the gallery space back to a black canvas to be used for Suki’s work.

From her experience so far, she has learnt that all jobs are important and that they affect the speed and overall look of the gallery as they all come together at the end to show the bigger picture of the full exhibition. She has also learnt that not only is there always something to do but sometimes there’s instead an obvious solution so you will need to improvise or get creative, and also ask for help when its needed.

She said that she takes the role that she did and was took as a positive experience for her and will continue to go and help this way, as she says it’s a good way to create connections by talking to artists and to others that are involved with the entirety of the exhibition process.

Candice said and told us that communication is key when it comes to the planning and setting up of exhibitions, it taught her to be more confident and allowed her to pick out also that work hard and that fail to share work and commitment, so people that don’t communicate and fail to work you notice that they don’t do anything.

Klara Ferm – 2nd year:

Klara spoke to us after Candice, about her job at the Arts Lab Photography Intern at Dartington. She said she got her role through her connections with someone that connected her within the estate, but her endless curiosity made her perfect for the role as she was interested with what they were doing.

Within her internship time, she also attends to workshops with a mixed variety of people and photographs them during the time of the workshops. She states off doing a work placement there, working in the workshops with people in difficult situations or with criminal records. Her role involves photographing the workshops but meeting people also and talking to them too.

Whilst working in the intern, she has been giving two separate options to exhibit her own work. The ‘Do More of What You Love’ exhibition and a personal work exhibition, working this all other types of people that she may have not worked with. With these two instalments of work that she got involved in she gained confidence and knowledge on how things work around the whole set up of things and also encouraged her to work in more interdisciplinary way and use art rather than just photography.

The role has not only allowed her to practice her photography skills but has also given her a chance to exhibit her own work to let people view it. But this has also allowed her confidence to grow and develop skills like communication to all types of people. This allowed her to connect with people and their stories to be shared with her.
