My work:

Throughout this whole brief I have learnt things and found out things for better or worse. Things such as not planning ahead and having a disjointed group didn’t really help as there’s been issues and problications throughout this whole project.

The project of the BAIS300 was named and labelled ‘.AND’ the reason for this was that it was for us photography students and I think this was a good title to use and have for a brief as it was made to be ‘photography ...and’ a choice of what we wanted to use and add, such as paint, text, moving image and fashion. I after some thought on doing text moved and changed very fast into doing collages and I think was a different and a great way to explore my work and a new form of photography that I haven’t done.

The people that had a biggest influence on my work are Man Ray, Joseph Cornell and Hannah Hoch as they all create different types and styles of collages. What I did is I took their work combined it all together and added my own emotion into the work that I will be creating. The emotion I added within my work was things that happened to me and around me in life to create these collages. I feel that the images are very powerful as it also has a message saying that 1 small piece can affect the whole piece of the collage and make it from the good to bad.

The reason that I created the cube in the centre was based of Joseph Cornell’s work, but the issue was to get a flowing theme with the box and the collages was going to be hard to make work, until I was reading an article based on the life cycle, which in turn led me to an idea of creating the box in the centre based on the life cycle and displaying my collages around in a circle of the box. My work was all hung and put up using Velcro pads and foam tape, the collages and box will sustain no damage to the paper or prints as I’ve placed and used backing board for the work for the box it was black and depending on the prints if I used white or black as the background it was used as that colour of backing too.

Overall, I am very happy with my work and where it was displayed. The only issues I’ve had to over come when creating my work was having to add a step ladder to go up to look at my work as I created at my eye height which is higher than an average person. And then instead of using string of wire to hand my cube away from the wall I used Velcro to put it in place onto the wall so that it holds as the wall I got given had not supports to sting or place wire to hold the cube as if I did it would of taken around 4meters by 2.5 meters of the room just to hang up a 30cmx30cm cube which is very extreme and not worth my blocking other peoples work, using the Velcro was a good idea too as its very seamless and not visible and also holds the box up very well.

Group analysis:

With the group work I would say it was very disjointed and last second as a lot of people were missing objects that where needed for there display such as projects, lights and computers. The thing that I fault this to are people not communicating clearly with each other at a fast pace and also time as time was a factor in this case of this brief and caught a few people by surprise as they weren’t ready for how close it was.

There was a lot of issues also with people not doing things on time as giving nor saying what they are displaying and this just caused the process to go into holt as nothing could be done nor moved after small things got sorted and organized such as spots and places for people.

To this also a lack of comminution and effort was made into what and how the room was going to look like as boards where chosen to be use and placed at the very last second and I wasn’t personally there to help move them, as of a planned weekend with family away which I would have changed if I knew days in advance and not the day before having to go move them. Also, to this when setting up the exhibition felt very disjointed as people where just all over the place not helping nor not knowing what to do, I went on my own to set up 3 walls to cover up the window side of the lectures office in BA photography, as I felt confident on what I was doing. After looking around no one helped except themselves it looked as people where either printing and displaying their own work or not helping. This was very upsetting for myself as I tried helping setting up by putting up peoples boards and all I got out on my space was a ripped and dirty corner where someone could of repainted the wall and vacuumed the floor which in turn I did with 2 other students as no one else was around as there work was put up, I felt the class in general was disjointed as they should be put in groups and given a task to complete as a group as if 1 person stops on there own and walks off everyone thinks they can do the same and follows.

After displaying our work, it looked good but you could see and feel the only thing that connected our work was only photography and the brief nothing else as there was no commitment on the set up of work.

After going around also and looking at other exhibitions it just showed how disjoined and out the loop our class was as a whole with the lectures and ourselves as you had amazing work produced by other groups such mini sets by interior design and then the warehouse made by textiles, paint and text and also fine art, and then you had the asylum in costume which was very dungeon like and yet very appropriate for their them. It felt as our room didn’t have that

But the pros of our exhibition I would say is that they where all displayed and looked like it was a real exhibition space compared to others as the one in the warehouse was very interactive but not very much as exhibition nor a normal gallery to look at, but the issue was there being so much going on that you got distracted from looking at the work, as in our exhibition the only thing you could get distracted by was someone else’s work within the room.

Our room also had a very good contrast of natural lighting to dark and dingy lighting for videos and dark images to be displayed with no natural lighting.

With the poster I also understood that we were low on time but I didn’t like the fact that 1 of the students used their work on the poster to advertise our whole proceed as I deemed this unfair on anyone else in the group, what I found unfair about it also was the fact we had no knowledge this was a poster design nor being used as a poster so we had no say as a group to what it said and what information, so we couldn’t add nor agree what was the best idea, this was a jumped over issue but I think as this was a group task this should of been made by the whole group or a group of people and not 1 person, as there’s always improvements that can be added that you may not notice yourself.

Overall this exhibition has taught me more about trust, time and also using to some extent hand tools and problem solving such as asking for help when being stuck or asking for advice when needed. Overall our small exhibition as a group I would say was disjoined and on my own work went well but with these issues I can approve upon and create and stronger and much better organized group exhibition adding little rules and things to keep the work within the same theme or link.
